Tempering You Into Truth

Happy day! I’m back! Did you miss me? With Cancer season in full swing and July blooming open, I’ve finally got my life back after another grueling Spring season, tending to the many gardens we care for here on Block Island, RI. Catch up with me on social media if you’re curious about what I’m up to. Lots of exciting stuff in the works :) BTW Read all the way to the end for a special surprise!

My goodness…Firstly, hoping everyone is simmering into Summer with a bit more ease than our very initiatory Spring had in store for us. Please forgive my absence for the month of June, I wanted to show up so badly and felt shame for not being able to. Yet, instead of doing so just to do so, amidst the 70-80+hr work weeks that Spring demands of my company; I decided to give myself permission to take time off from writing, to restore and regroup. Very unlike me!! However it was time that I utilized to regain balance in my nervous system; and drum up a wholleeee lot of juicy insightful goodness, that will melodically guide us along our summer ahead. We’ve also got a new moon in Cancer today, which we’ll be diving into a bit as well.

I feel like all Spring I was oscillating between “yay I’m exactly in the right place and everything is working out in my favor!”, to the complete polar opposite of “Oh no everything is crumbling and life is such a mess!”. I feel like it’s so key here in these times of many ups and downs (sometimes several times a day), to take all of it with a grain of salt, and one single itty bitty step at a time.

With all this back and forth between the spectrums of ice cold and blazing hot, pure white and darkest black; in spiritual, emotional, mental and physical standards. It almost makes you feel like you’re being tempered.

There’s a few definitions of “tempered” that I think are important to note. The Old English word “temprian” means, “bring something into the required condition by mixing it with something else… or act as a neutralizing or counterbalancing force to something”.

I also think that it’s interesting that another word for tuning a piano that’s out of sorts, is to temper it.

This is crucial information for these times which we inevitably weave in and out of in the natural cycles of life. Trying to find middle ground in these unsettling seas, is especially difficult because we aren’t even sure where we are going half the time. But, once we take a step back and can view ourselves from an outside perspective, to notice we are simply being tempered…it can aid us in the direction we’re heading.

We all can resonate with the essence of how it feels to be tempered… with being tested, stretched, and moved along on this rollercoaster of life sometimes without say. What’s been medicinal to me in these times, is reflecting this is an essential push and pull, for me to be tempered into the person I am becoming. What personal piano are you tempering into tune?

I think it’s almost comical how humbling these seasons of temperance are. In yoga, there is a posture named ‘humbled warrior’ where you are in sort of a long lunge position (warrior 2 stance) and then bow your heart forward over your front knee. I always find this pose comforting and steadying, during a firey practice; and think it’s symbolism is intentional in the context of being tempered.

When the environment of our lives might come across as chaos, or contraction to our nervous systems… the conditioning we’ve learned is to just keep a tight grip on control, keep our heads down until we’re out the other side, and to be a tenacious warrior. Not to say that isn’t sometimes A. The only option, and B. helpful in certain circumstances… yet could there be a better way? I for one am exhausted beyond belief of just being a ‘warrior’… I want to bow my heart to something bigger than me and rest in the knowing I’ve done all I can. And release the need for control or perfection, acknowledging it’s time for someone, or something else to harness the reins.

The card Temperance in the Tarot is one of much depth, and possibly my favorite (don’t tell the rest)… it speaks of this in between threshold between the above and below. It speaks of us being the physical vehicle for matters of the ether like: creativity, presence, pleasure, service and sparks of magic to flow through our vessel in order to be made manifest in this 3D world.

In June I took a quick 2 day road trip up to the Catskills in NY, to go to my dear friends’ gig. On the morning of the Summer Solstice before I was to depart, we decided to take a quick dip in a near by river. After submerging in the cool, rejuvenating water I laid there naked on a rock, gazing up towards the sky through the canopy of trees and warped branches.

One foot was lightly floating in the water, while the other was grounded on the rock. In this moment, I was harvesting the deep pleasure of the presence I was beholding. After a demanding 6-8 weeks of work running both of my businesses and starting a 3rd; I was finally suspended and supported in the expanse of my own presence. Elated to have pulled off the most successful Spring season yet, and grateful to have simultaneously honored my intuition's call to venture to New York for the Solstice; trusting my team to hold down the fort while I was away.

You see the tarot card Temperance’s visual depiction is one in which there is a winged figure, pouring some type of liquid from one chalice to another. One of their feet is rooted on the shore, and one of their feet is immersed in the water body below them. While I laid there on that rock in the middle of that river, with one foot in each of these realms, this card’s energy came over me and, I was humbled completely.

It’s one thing to try and grapple with your life at hand with all your might, and it’s another to employ a greater understanding that whatever it is that’s testing you, is really just tempering you.

Tempering you to become the version of yourself that can receive deep healing, transformation, abundance and pleasure graciously. Who can exercise trust in the unknown, relax your grip on control, and to dial up supportive modalities as needed. Tempering you into the next layer of your beingness, one in which you can be of service in ways that truly uplift your soul. And, humbling you into accepting the understanding you are here for a vital purpose, and to be a sovereign vehicle of that purpose. The addition and subtraction game life plays is just to simply get you closer towards it.

The objective I feel of this New Moon in Cancer, feels as though it has it’s tenets in generosity. Cancer is the Mother archetype of the Zodiac, and all Mother’s give life among many many other things. But most of all, I think it’s important to consider the fact that after how hard we work, after all the many expansions + contractions we hold in our nervous systems; that the opportunity is there both within the Temperance card and within this New Moon; to give to ourselves. How many of you feel selfish if your attention is focused only on you? How many of you are horrified of being labeled as “selfish”?

I believe this New Moon wants to empower us to not only give to ourselves in ways that feel authentic to us, but to really pour into that experience with our whole hearts. Just as Mother’s do. Treat your inner secret needs that no one knows about, as your top priority in the Moon cycle ahead. Rub up against the discomfort of choosing you over and over again, and watch how that will translate into your effectiveness in your life. It is cliche, but pouring from an empty cup is the old way! Not the best way, and certainly does not have to be your way.

Fill your cup this weekend and allow the cycles, phases and many facets of our lives be what they are for a moment. So we can place it all down, lean in and give thanks for this very breath we’re breathing in.

Light a candle for JUST you tonight, tomorrow or this week ahead.

You deserve it.
